On Friday, June 9, Italian special forces seized control of a Turkish cargo ship that was attacked by armed stowaways off the coast of Naples.
The Galeta Seaways, with 22 crew members on board, was en route to France when “unidentified persons” were found on board.
Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said special forces descended from two helicopters onto the Turkish vessel and rescued about 15 crew members held hostage by stowaways, two or three of whom were armed with sharp objects.
Mr Crosetto confirmed in a tweet that the ship’s hijacker had been captured.
