School students’ narrow escape as car drives erratically down Mangere East street
A panicked driver of a car veering erratically on a street in suburban Auckland yesterday nearly hit a student before turning around and driving along the pavement and berm, narrowly missing two other students.
One student leaned against a fence, arms held high, as black porters drove onto the sidewalk at low speed, while another student ran onto the road as vehicles drove along the sidewalk and berm, crushing at least one large bag of trash.
Other students chased the car, some throwing objects in its direction. At least 20 teenagers can be seen in the video.
The mother of one of the students posted on her Facebook page today video from two angles showing the dramatic events in Mangere East, south Auckland.

“Keep an eye out for this car, she nearly hit my son and his cousin yesterday as they were walking to their pick up location after school.”
The incident happened about 3.15pm yesterday on Woburn St, near the Portage Rd intersection, the woman told reporters. Herald.
Her son saw a shirtless student being picked up by officers outside the school and his behavior appeared to be “aggressive and confrontational”.
“Fortunately, my son and the other students were able to escape unscathed, but he was traumatized by this incident and it is likely that other students were also traumatized.”

She monitors her son’s social media and only learned about it after seeing another student post a video online.
“I haven’t reported it to the police, only to the principal of the school…[who] It is recommended that I do this. I will do this tomorrow. “
