The 2022/23 season might be over, but some teams will still make headlines. As they have dominated most of the campaign anyway with their never-give-up attitude on the pitch. One team that comes to my mind is Orlando Pirates as they have shown that they are a great team in the DStv Premiership by taking two trophies namely MTN 8 and Nedbank Cup. Throughout this highly praised success, the manager Pirates assistant Mandla Ncikazi has spoken about his colleagues on the coaching staff who were introduced to him last year. He said that he had his doubts about working with people he did not know at the time.
Ncikazi felt that head coach José Riveiro and his other assistant Sergio Almenara were not known in the country, making it difficult for them to go about their business. Since they had to familiarize themselves with the new environment, including the equipment, the food, the culture, the people and even the languages. Ncikazi was used to being a co-coach with now former colleague Fadlu Davids. He didn’t expect many changes from the revamped coaching staff, but it didn’t take long for them to click and work well together for the benefit of the club. “To be honest with you, I was a bit confused because you don’t know these guys (Riveiro and his assistant Sergio Almenara), you don’t know what they have and what kind of people they are,” Ncikazi told SABC. Ujozi FM.
The former Golden Arrows mentor claimed that despite all the ups and downs they have had in Mayfair, they are working as a collective to achieve the utmost excellence within the club. Ncikazi felt that he should not have judged the other managers who came to the club. “You can see that the club has good intentions. If we don’t get results, they are going to make changes and we have to accept it. This is not about me, not about someone else, but about the fans all over Africa,” Ncikazi said speaking to Ukhozi FM.
