Janis was born, into the family of Harriet Grossman, on February 11, 1928, in Manhattan, New York City. Sidney, his father, was an art dealer and writer, his mother, was also a writer.
Mr. Janis began acting in his early teens and went on to appear on Broadway, radio, film, and hundreds of television shows, including numerous live theatrical plays in the 1950s. He played the protective father of Dawber’s Mindy on “Mork & Mindy” for four seasons beginning in 1978.
